With increasing age it gets more difficult to read at the normal distance. The arms have become “too short” to hold a newspaper at the correct distance for reading. Vision gets blurry and sometimes people feel a dull pressure-like pain in the forehead or in the eyes.
With advancing years the lens hardens and looses elasticity. The ability to focus on close objects (accommodation) declines significantly.
However, this is nothing to worry about, because sooner or later everybody will experience this. It is a phenomenon caused by the natural course of aging.
Therefore, physicians recommend to have a regular eye check once a year from the age of 40 and to make an appointment with an eye specialist.
Glasses with convex lenses, so called plus glasses, can compensate age related sight deterioration. Every 5 years accommodation declines by another 0.75 dioptre until it gets completely lost at the age of about 55 to 60.
