Heart attack is a term that describes an irreparable destruction of parts of the cardiac muscle. The cause is a sudden coronary thrombosis, meaning blood clots in a coronary artery, which restrict the blood circulation of the heart and the oxygen supply of the cardiac muscle. The sooner the heart attack is treated the smaller is the damage to the cardiac muscle and thus the risk of later complications. The blood clot that blocked the coronary blood vessel can be dissolved with drugs or removed by means of a balloon catheter.
Rehabilitation includes physical training, quitting smoking, relaxation, change of diet, maintaining a healthier lifestyle, and an intense treatment of diseases that increase the risk of heart attacks.
