More and more adults but above all also children suffer from allergy. Hay fever, neurodermatitis, or asthma are highly prevalent in every day life.
In the past mothers and grandmothers let their children crawl on the floor, the children took all kind of stuff into the mouth and tried it, this was considered to have a "cleaning effect". Similar as with a vaccination or an inoculation this boosts the immune system. These children will less likely run the risk of developing allergies and they show a better resistance. Exactly this is the principle used by the doctors from the Berlin Charité. They mix a "cocktail" with selected bacteria and give it to 600 babies in the scope of a study in order to fight possible allergies right at the beginning. A method that has already shown promising results when tested with mice.
Now the doctors from the Berlin Charité hope they can apply this "fecal therapy" also on humans. If they are successful, this will be a small sensation and a real prospect for the future and the fight against allergies.
